Girl pupils urged to embrace education to lead nation
Speaker of Council, Cllr Colleen Makhubele, visited Alexandra High School in Region E recently and took part in a sanitary pads drop-off initiative by the Vivian Mokome Foundation.
“Growing up in the village of Giyani in Limpopo, I had a dream of coming to Joburg, specifically in Alex where my uncle lived and worked while I was in school. So studied because I knew that the only way out of poverty and hardship was education. I now have a degree in IT and have been elected Speaker of Council in the City of Johannesburg,” said Cllr Makhubele.
She urged pupils that they need to choose their careers wisely and take education seriously and not waste opportunity learning.
“We are here with you because we care about you as the City of Joburg. We care about your future. We don’t want you to be absent from school because you don’t have a pad. We want you to remain in school until matric,” Cllr Makhubele said.
The foundation’s founder, Dr Vivian Mokome, said she had achieved a lot in life through education and hard.
“I come from Soshanguve, a dusty township. The only way I came out of the dust was through education. The only way you can get out of a situation is through education. I was once like you, wearing the same uniform and I did not allow distractions and my surroundings to discourage me. Where you come from must motivate you and not discourage you.’
“You have no control over your monthly periods, but you have control over a sexual engagement. Say no to sex,” said Dr Mokome.
The event ended with each girl given a personalised care package to take home. The supply of sanitary pads by the foundation will run for 12 months.
